Early Resolutions...

There are a lot of things I want to change about next year. I want to be organized, productive and neat. After all, I am going to be 50 years old! A milestone I still can't wrap my head around. But I digress...

In a vain hope of achieving even one of those resolutions, I am trying to get all the tools set up on the laptop -- Outlook for emails, because I can organize them better than Yahoo; One Note for all those little things to file and tips to hold onto; Excel spreadsheets for WIP as well as my normal ones for submissions and expenses. I am hoping to get my schedule set up so that I write a little every day as well as exercise and clean the house...all of which have been sadly neglected lately. I am making lists for EVERYTHING I can think of.

I am also employing my shredder with great gusto on all the papers lying around the house that I keep meaning to file somewhere in case I need them someday and the junk mail. There is something terribly satisfying about filling the recycling bin with little strips of paper...

Of course, my laptop is becoming my life, and if it crashes or something, I will be in terrible shape...but for the moment, I am actually working on a new piece as well as re-writing an old one, and starting a class on Breaking the Writer's Block tomorrow.

So, officially, I can say my resolutions for 2009 are:

1) Write at least 500 words a day.
2) Lose at least 20 pounds.
3) Clean and de-clutter the house.

How about you?

As a part of your "getting organized" resolution I strongly recommend to start backing up your data. It's not hard -- just buy a several hundred gigabyte external hard drive that plugs into your computer via USB. Seriously, I would not even wait until new year to do that. I would do it now, because I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing that the only copy of all that I created can disappear any day in a laptop crash!

That is actually high on my priority list. :) I have my eye on a 1 Terabyte at Circuit City. Maybe I'll just go ahead and get it... :) Good advice.

I second the backup drive suggestion. One thing Windows Vista does right is the backup utility. I don't have to think about it until the drive gets full. Took Microsoft long enough to do that!

Well, I do have Vista, so that is comforting...
