Kannibal Kitties

Okay, so maybe not cannibals...but definitely mighty hunters.

Yesterday, I heard what sounded like one of the cats was outside scratching on the French door glass to be let in. I ignored it for awhile, because the cat door is open, and they could let themselves in when they wanted to. But it still kept going, so after a bit, I conceded and went down to let them in. Only, it wasn't what I thought it was. Elf was sitting on one edge of the dining room, and Luther was lying on the floor across from her, and between them was a field mouse, complaining about the situation most vociferously.

I grabbed the dustpan and threw the mouse into the backyard, with an admonition to run far, far away, and not to come back.

Apparently, it didn't listen very well, because a couple of hours later, I heard squeaks again and went back down to find Elf and Luther crouched at the foot of the stairs with a mouse pressed up against the bottom stair riser. So...I grabbed the dustpan and threw it out into the backyard. I can't swear it was the same one, but it was about the same size.

Finally, when my husband got home from a late night at the office about 1am, I was sitting with him in the living room, when Elf walked across the floor with a mouse in her mouth. She got tired of it and dropped its barely living body behind the television stand a minute later after we weren't suitably impressed, and I threw it out the back door. Now, that one was smaller and grayer than the earlier visitors, so I am pretty sure it was a different mouse.

But I am beginning to re-think leaving the cat door open for them at all times...

On the bright side (I suppose) they're preventing mice from entering your home. ("just doing my job, mom!")

I'd believe that if they hadn't been IN the house with the mice...and if there hadn't been the one last week who got behind the refrigerator and ate the cord...
